Why
Never have we needed listening more than we do today.
For hundreds of millennia, humanity survived, learned, connected and grew by listening. The sounds of wind, water and birds constantly reminded us of our place as part of nature, not above it. Listening was our primary connection with the world, and with each other.
Writing was invented only 5,000 years ago and reading has been universal for only around 200 years, but in that short time we have lost contact with sound. Our society has become overwhelmingly ocular: we teach our children how to read and write, but not how to speak or listen. Our attention is fragmented and distracted by technology, especially social media, and most younger people prefer typing to speaking, and looking at screens to listening. Our societies are increasingly polarised as we judge and condemn those we disagree with, rather than seeking to understand them, and as Internet echo chambers entrench dogma and foster extremism.
As we multiply, so does our noise, with terrible consequences for human happiness, effectiveness and well-being – and for the living things with which we share this planet. More than half of us live in noisy cities. Surrounded by constant din, we switch our ears off or anesthetise ourselves with headphones, often damaging our hearing with excessive volume. The World Health Organization estimates that one in four human beings already suffers from hearing loss, and a billion young people are joining that group due to headphone abuse.
Whether we listen or not, sound affects us physically, psychologically, cognitively, and even changes our behaviour. Our deadened listening means that sound has become a nuisance and even a threat, rather than a source of health and happiness. But sound is wondrous and infinitely interesting, and restoring our proper relationship with it will bring endless benefits. That's what this community is all about: we're here to help you reclaim your listening, restore your relationship with sound, and explore its infinite wonders.
It's time to start listening again, before it's too late.
Conscious listening always creates understanding. Without it, we are on slippery slope toward disconnection, conflict, hatred, violence and war.

Some questions you might have...
These answers are correct at the time of writing, but please remmeber that there's much to do and some things may change
Are there tiers of membership?
At the start, we have only one membership tier: full membership gives you access to everything in the community. As we grow and enrich the offering, we may offer higher or lower tiers, but we'll be checking in with members before doing anything of that nature.
How much does it cost?
Membership is just £38/$49 per month or £30/$38 if you take out an annual subscription. Either way, that's less than a cup of coffee a day. For UK residents only, we have to charge VAT on top of these prices: we hope you may be able to put this through a company to reclaim it.
What if I want to cancel?
If you choose to cancel during your free trial there will be no charge at all. Of course, you won't be able to apply for another free trial in the future if you wish to rejoin. If you choose to cancel once you're a full member, your membership will cease at the end of the current month/year (depending on what you've paid for) and we won't charge you again. Either way, you won't be able to rejoin the community for six months after the date of your cancellation.
What platform are you using?
After extensive research, we've chosen Circle.com as our platform. It's a full-featured, robust cloud-based platform that also offers an app for smartphones and is used by hundreds of vibrant communities.
I have an idea. Can I contribute?
Absolutely! Our small team is keen to hear from you if you have any ideas about things you'd like to see in the community, or connections with like-minded programmes or organisations, or indeed anything interesting or useful about sound and listening. Please click the button below or email us at support@thelisteningsociety.community.
I know someone who'd like this. How do I introduce them?
When you join, we'll be offering you a further free month for each person who joins on your recommendation. We will give you a special code to make sure we know they came from you, and to give them a free month trial too. Just email them with your code.
